Thirsty Thursday & Hungry Hearts #13 – The Best Kind of Magic

Thirsty Thursday & Hungry Hearts is a weekly meme hosted by (un)Conventional Bookviews. The idea is to share a quote with food or drinks that showed up in a recent read, as well as if it’s something you think you’d like or not. Please share the title of the book it happened in, as well as the character who ate or drank the special little something you discovered between the pages of a good read.

Haven’t participated in this meme in over a year! How is that possible?! Glad it’s still going. This was one of my favorites!

This week’s quote comes from The Best Kind of Magic by Crystal Cestari (click on the title for my review). In this book full of magic, Amber can see true love and can see everyone’s soulmate. Love this concept! She also loves to bake and aspires to be a pastry chef, which means there are some yummy food quotes.

In this quote, Amber goes to her favorite bakery, and this is what the owner has for her:

My Hungry Hearts Quote

“She walks over to the cooler and pulls out a heaping cup of dirt and worms. While it may not sound like the most fancy or desirable of desserts, Ella’s version is beyond compare: homemade devil’s food pudding, mounds of hand-whipped heavy cream, a box full of crushed chocolate cookies, and soft, tangy gummy worms. I don’t care if it’s kid stuff; it’s amazeballs.”

This sounds so sweet, delicious, and fattening. I love it!

By the way, I’m giving away a copy of this book! Only about 24 hours left to enter! Check out my review by clicking on the title of the book.

This week’s quote comes from My Heart is Yours by Amanda Leigh (click on the title for my review). In this book, we follow the life of Sam and her relationship with Jason in the span of six years.

In this quote, Sam has a little get-together with her girlfriends. And here is some of the food they eat:

My Hungry Hearts Quote

“Sam was very open about food. The other girls weren’t. So the menu was mostly ‘normal stuff’, but there was a little something ‘different’ there for Sam. The spread included deviled eggs, mini spinach and feta quiche, spinach and artichoke dip, mini cucumber and cream cheese sandwiches, and for Sam, Asian garlic and soy flavored chicken wings with scallion soy dipping sauce.”

I LOVE deviled eggs, and I LOVE spinach and artichoke dip, so this sounds delicious! And I definitely wouldn’t mind trying the rest. Now I’m hungry…

This week’s quote comes from The Cupcake Witch by Poppy Lawless (click on the title for my review). As the title suggests, this is about a woman who loves to bake, and she may or may not be a witch. She is just discovering her abilities, in both magic and baking.

This is the opening paragraph of the book, and it definitely set the mood.

My Hungry Hearts Quote

“Holding the whisk tightly, I swirled the pale-yellow batter around the bowl, the sweet scents of vanilla, brown sugar, and bitter dark chocolate perfuming the air. Even though it was a cool autumn morning, the heat from the oven made the kitchen feel toasty warm. I’d been baking all morning: expresso mini cupcakes with cappuccino flavored frosting, matcha green tea macaroons, and strawberry rhubarb coffee cake. The kitchen smelled divine. Now, with a pot of coffee brewing and a batch of chocolate chip walnut cookies just about ready to go into the oven, I could almost relax.

I am not a fan of coffee or green tea, but this quote definitely made me want to try these. And I just had to share it with my coffee-loving readers 😉

This week’s quote comes from Ascenders by C.L. Gaber (click on the title for my review). This is a book about a high school for kids who have recently passed away. It’s kind of like the in-between place before you go where you’re meant to go.

In this scene, Walker just found out she’s dead. Someone suggested to her to take risks and test her limit, so here is her reaction.

My Hungry Hearts Quote

“He wanted me to test the limits? Fine. When no one was looking, I snuck to the cafeteria between periods and ate half a red-velvet cake, three brownies, and a cup of creamy, handmade chocolate ice cream. I washed it down with two slices of pizza and a frothy vanilla milk shake garnished with a large handful of rainbow sprinkles. My stomach felt just fine and dandy, thank you very much. Tums were obviously not required in the afterlife.”

This sounds heavenly! And it’s definitely one advantage of being dead. You can eat all you want and not gain weight or get unhealthy!

Did this quote make you hungry?

This week’s quote comes from Romancing the Dark in the City of Light by Ann Jacobus (click on the title for my review). This book was so good! Plus, it gave me a couple food and drink quotes I just had to share with you guys.

In the first scene, Summer runs into Kurt, the bad boy, at an ice cream shop. They order Belgian chocolate ice creams and are now sitting down to eat.

In the second scene, they share a taxi, and Summer whips out her flask. She’s a bit of an alcoholic.

My Hungry Hearts Quote

He leans over the table and x-rays her with his eyes as he takes a bite of the rich dark ice cream. Then he holds the spoon in his lips and closes his eyes. She can’t help staring. ‘Mmmm. Orgasmic,’ he murmurs.”

My Thirsty Thursday Quote

“En route to the surprise destination, she pulls out her flask and downs several glugs. ‘Whew. That’s better,’ she says. She offers it to Kurt.

He takes a swig, then squints at her. ‘What IS that?’

‘Blueberry and vanilla bean vodka mixed. Plus a pinch of cinnamon. I like to think of it as a liquid muffin.”

Even though I am not a huge fan of this Kurt guy, he definitely made ice cream sexy! And I like the sound of that liquid muffin. I’d try it! Just not in a flask…in a taxi 🙂

Thirsty Thursday & Hungry Hearts #8 – Blossoming Flower

I have missed this meme! Had to take a break from a lot of blog stuff while I was student teaching. Now I am happily back, and I’m already on the lookout for food and drink quotes 🙂

This week’s quote comes from Blossoming Flower by Vivian Winslow. Flor begins an internship on a ranch, doing what she loves: working with horses. Then, she meets Collin, the horse trainer, who she feels a connection with.

In this scene, it’s Collin’s birthday, and Flor insisted on taking him out to dinner. So they are at Collin’s friend’s restaurant, and they are starting with drinks.

My Thirsty Thursday Quote

“Collin touches his friend’s glass with his and Flor’s. ‘Thank you, guys.’ They all take a sip, the mix of dry, earthy and fruit flavors going down smoothly.

‘What is this?’ Flor asks, noting the hints of papaya and pineapple and roasted red pepper.

‘Only the best mezcal for you and my friend. I found this distributer down in Oxnard who gets this great Tobala. Drink it slowly. A bottle of this costs a small fortune, but is totally worth it.”

I may not be a huge alcohol drinker, but when I do drink, I love fruity drinks. And the mention of papaya and pineapple had me wanting this.

This week’s quote comes from Loving Lucas by Violetta Rand. Karlie is in a relationship with an abusive ass, and the very hot motorcycle-riding cop, Lucas, comes to her rescue. He gives her a way out, and she takes it.

I just started this book yesterday, so I don’t know too much about it, but it had this quote that made me hungry, so I had to share it. In this scene, Karlie’s friend kind of reveals an embarrassing secret in front of the new hot guy, Lucas, so she gets a little frazzled when he invites her to sit next to him.

My Hungry Hearts Quote

“It takes me a minute or two to collect myself enough to accept his invitation. After I do, I avoid his eyes, grab a paper plate, and make a fuss over my burger, adding lettuce, pickles, ketchup, cucumber, mustard, and mayonnaise. Maybe I should eat a bunch of onions so Lucas will stay away from me. I take a generous bite, my body still tingling with embarrassment.”

It may be 9 in the morning as I write this, but now I’m craving a burger…minus the onions. I may have to plan a barbecue soon. My husband makes some awesome burgers!

ghetto12hq-2

This week’s quote comes from Ghetto by M.L. Sparrow. In the faraway future, the president’s daughter, Sunny, is kidnapped by rebels, but she soon begins to sympathize with the people living in what is known as the Ghetto and feels a connection with one of her captors.

I’m going to try to describe this scene without giving anything about the plot away. In this scene, Sunny and Sin are somewhere where they shouldn’t be, and someone who is helping them brings them some food. Neither of them have eaten a good meal in awhile, so they definitely enjoy it.

My Hungry Hearts Quote

“I don’t know where he got it from in the middle of the night, but the meal is sublime; the chicken moist and tender, potatoes crisp on the outside and fluffy inside, the gravy thick. I’m sorely tempted to lick the plate clean once I’m finished, but instead I push it away and lean back to watch Sin mopping up his gravy with a Yorkshire pudding.

Picking up a napkin, I hand it to him when he’s done, saying, ‘You appear to have missed your mouth.'”

This seriously got me so hungry! The crispy-on-the-outside-yet-fluffy-on-the-inside potatoes sound delicious! And I’ve never had Yorkshire pudding, so I had to Google it. I think I know what I’m going to try to get my husband to make me in the near future since he’s more of the cook in the family 🙂

Varley_Bleed

This week’s quote comes from Bleed by Dax Varley. A bleeder, a psychic, a sin-eater, a healer, and a speaker of all languages come together in this paranormal mystery.

In this scene, Xyan is reminded of when she saw the new girl, Miranda, bleeding profusely at school.

My Hungry Hearts Quote

“Xyan snapped a Pop Tart in half and brought it toward her mouth. Raspberry. She was usually all for raspberry Pop Tarts, but today it reminded her of that new girl at school. The one who’d spewed blood all over the restroom. O-kay. There went her dearly departed appetite. She tucked the pastry back into the foil.”

I’m more of a S’mores Pop Tart girl myself, but I would probably lose my appetite with any red foods after witnessing what Xyan did 🙂

This week’s quote comes from Back To Us by Teresa Roman. Two damaged people falling in love with each other even when they don’t know how to love themselves. Such a great story! Plus, it had a great food quote that I just had to share.

In this scene, Jessica and Justin are still getting to know each other, and this is the first time they are eating out together.

My Hungry Hearts Quote

“Our food finally arrived. The server put my gyro in front of me and then proceeded to fill the table with plate after plate. There was Greek salad and pita bread, hummus, falafel, shish kebabs. It looked like she’d just unloaded the entire menu on our table.

‘A few things?’ I said to Justin after the waitress walked away. ‘You ordered like the entire menu.’

‘Well, I wanted you to try my favorites. Whatever we don’t finish I’ll bring back to work. Believe me, it will get eaten.’

I picked up my gyro and bit into it. It was amazing. The warm spiced meat felt like it melted in my mouth.”

I’ll be honest. I’ve never really had Greek food, and I’ve never had a gyro, but I am intrigued and would love to try one.

Have you had a gyro? Any good? Feel free to share a link to yours below so I can visit your blog 🙂
